Workplace exposures and employment patterns in adult onset asthmatics and diabetics

Abstract: No evidence was found that changing jobs was used as a strategy to find more tolerable working conditions. The high proportion of unemployment due to ill-health among adult onset asthmatics deserves further investigation.

“…The progression of work limitations to permanent work disability can be devastating for individuals of employment age with diabetes. Studies including individuals of working age have determined that those with diabetes are more likely to be unemployed and 50% of workers age 21 to 64 years who reported diabetes as a cause of activity limitations were also unemployed (Brown, Pagan, & Bastida, 2005;CDC, 2011;Turner, Cherry, & Robinson, 2005;VonKorff et al, 2005). When employees with diabetes are working, their mean earnings are approximately 29% less than those of employees with no disabilities (U.S. Census Bureau, 2002).…”
