“…Our finding that working memory was strongly correlated with school academic performance is consistent with previous studies, which indicates that working memory is highly correlated with fluid intelligence (Kane & Engle, 2002), and other high-level cognitive skills such as reading, mathematics, and reasoning (Colom et al, 2004;Engle et al, 1992;Jarrold & Towse, 2006). Compared to never-drinkers, binge-drinkers performed normally on the working memory and scored normally on the school academic performance.…”

“…This task has been linked to neural activity within the Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex (DLPC) (Petrides, Alivisatos, Meyer, & Evans, 1993) and has been used to assess working memory capacity in several studies (Chaytor & Schmitter-Edgecombe, 2004;Chey, Lee, Kim, Kwon, & Shin, 2002;Pukrop et al, 2003;Ward, Shum, McKinlay, Baker-Tweney, & Wallace, 2005). Moreover, studies have shown that working memory is highly related to general cognitive functions such as reading, mathematics, and reasoning (Colom, Rebello, Palacios, Juan-Espinosa, & Kyllonen, 2004;Engle, Cantor, & Carullo, 1992;Jarrold & Towse, 2006). Therefore, we also ask the participants to report their school academic performance.…”

“…The Gf-WM correlations are generally higher when the relations are examined at the level of factor scores, composite scores, or latent variables. To illustrate, correlations ranging from .59 to .89 have been reported in studies by Ackerman, Beier and Boyle (2002), Colom, Abad, Rebollo and Shih (2005), Colom, Flores-Mendoza and Rebollo (2003), Colom, Rebollo, Palacios, Juan-Espinosa and Kyllonen (2004), Colom and Shih (2004), Conway, et al (2002), Conway, Kane and Engle (2003), Kyllonen and Christal (1990), Suss, Oberaurer, Wittmann, Wilhelm and Schulze (2002), , and Wilhelm and Oberaurer (2006), and reported a median correlation of .72 across 14 different data sets.…”

“…Kyllonen and Christal (1990) showed, in a highly cited study, that working memory determines the condition of psychometric g almost completely. Several authors, following this line of research, showed that working memory and executive control largely determine the condition of Gf and psychometric g (Blair 2006;Colom et al 2004;Conway et al 2002;Kyllonen and Christal 1990;Miller and Vernon 1992). In fact, Engel de Abreu et al (2010) showed that cognitive control mechanisms, rather than storage as such, are the source of the link between working memory and fluid intelligence.…”
