Working memory in chess

Abstract: Three experiments investigated the role of working memory in various aspects of thinking in chess. Experiment 1 examined the immediate memory for brieflypresented chess positions from master games in players from a wide range of abilities, following the imposition of various secondary tasks designed to block separate components of working memory. Suppression of the articulatory loop (by preventing subvocal rehearsal) had no effect on measures of recall, whereas blocking the visuospatial sketchpad (by manipulat… Show more

“…According to SEEK, a large part of chessplayers' memory is encoded verbally. Empirical data (Charness, 1974;Robbins et al, 1995;Saariluoma, 1992) clearly refute this claim, and show that visuo-spatial encoding plays a much more important role. SEEK has little to say about the sorts of recoding present in Chase and Simon's (1973b) and Saariluoma's (1991) experiments.…”

“…Using Baddeley's (1986) concurrent memory load paradigm, Robbins et al (1995) studied the effect of interfering conditions during the presentation of chess positions. They found that a verbal task had only a minimal effect on performance, while a visuo-spatial task and a task aimed at suppressing the central executive caused a significant loss of performance (more than 2/3 in comparison with the control task).…”

“…Although we considered only the verbal representational system, results from another group support our claim for material-specific effects of DA at retrieval. Robbins et al (1996) found that memory retrieval for the arrangement of chess pieces was affected much more by a visuo-spatial concurrent task than a verbal-articulatory task. In our study, we found that digit monitoring did not lead to as much interference as did word monitoring, although the two tasks were equally difficult.…”

“…However, empirical results also show that limiting thinking time does affect performance (Gobet & Simon, 1996a). In addition, well-controlled experiments using interfering tasks similar to that described by Dreyfus and Dreyfus have shown that the quality of play is substantially impaired (Robbins et al, 1995). Thus, the information provided by rapid perceptual recognition must be seconded by other thinking mechanisms that Expert Intuition in Nursing 12 appear to be analytic in nature-for example, in chess, generating sequences of moves and evaluating them.…”
