Working memory and second language development: A complex, dynamic future?

Abstract: Working memory (WM) is inherently dynamic and complex, being a multi-faceted system that links storage and processing components; yet it is widely understood as internal. Hence, in second language (L2) research, its connection to complex dynamic systems theory (CDST) remains underspecified. This paper seeks to bridge a gap between CDST and WM in L2 research. First, definitions of WM are reviewed, along with evidence for its relationship to L2 outcomes. Next, a brief overview of CDST highlights its metatheoreti… Show more

“…Another reason relates to the theoretical challenges of conceptualizing abstract psychological constructs as complex systems. A number of individual differences constructs in language learning have been conceptualized as complex systems, such as motivation (Papi & Hiver, 2020), strategy development (Amerstorfer, 2020), anxiety (Gregersen, 2020), working memory (Jackson, 2020), and willingness to communicate (MacIntyre, 2020). To examine these constructs from a relation-intensive perspective, for example to model L2 motivation as a complex system, we must consider the components that form the system, and how these components align with our measurement instruments.…”

“…Similarly, the field of L2 acquisition has made claims on the links between WM and L2 development, performance, and processing (for recent reviews, see Jackson, 2020;McCormick & Sanz, 2022;Serafini, 2023;Tsai et al, 2016;Wen, 2016;Wen & Jackson, 2022;Wen & Skehan, 2021; see also Kormos's and Li's contributions to this special issue). These recent accounts on the nexus between WM and L2 development have included six major claims.…”
