Working Electrodes from Amalgam Paste for Electrochemical Measurements

Abstract: Paste electrode with paste amalgam as an active electrode material is described here for the first time. Designed electrode from silver paste amalgam (AgA-PE) is solely metallic and does not contain any organic binder. Mechanical surface regeneration of AgA-PE is performed in the same way as for classical carbon paste electrodes and reproducibility of such regeneration is about 10%. Electrochemical surface regeneration appeared very efficient for most measurements. In dependence on paste metal content, the ele… Show more

“…The simple apparatus described in experimental part and depicted in Figure 1 markedly decreases the risk of environmental contamination with mercury and its compounds, because the paste amalgam used as anode is not liquid and thus it cannot be spilled [33]. The main advantage of the apparatus is constant concentration of mercuric ions in the electrolyte because of the autoregulation process: the amount of mercury deposited at working electrode (cathode) is exactly equal to the amount of mercury transferred into the solution by anodic dissolution of silver paste amalgam.…”
