Work Stress and Low Sense of Coherence Is Associated With Type 2 Diabetes in Middle-Aged Swedish Women

Abstract: OBJECTIVE -The risk of type 2 diabetes is suggested to be increased for individuals exposed to stress. We analyzed the association of work stress by high demands, low decision latitude, and job strain (combination of high demands and low decision latitude) with type 2 diabetes. We also studied low sense of coherence (SOC) (a factor for successful coping with stressors) in association with type 2 diabetes. Finally, we investigated the combination of SOC and demands or SOC and decision latitude in association wi… Show more

“…All individuals were Swedish and selected from the Stockholm Diabetes Prevention Program (SDPP). [11][12][13] They were either (i) healthy control subjects with NGT and BMI p26 kg m À2 (n ¼ 188), or (ii) T2D patients with BMI varying from 18.4 to 45.6 kg m À2 (n ¼ 243) or (iii) obese subjects with NGT and BMI X30 kg m À2 (n ¼ 199). For comprehensive analysis, T2D patients were divided into the subgroups based upon a BMI cutoff of 30 kg m À2 , that is non-obese T2D patients with BMI o30 kg m À2 (n ¼ 151) and obese T2D patients with BMIX30 kg m À2 (n ¼ 92).…”

“…A summed index was created from the three alternative responses; according to the distribution of responses among all respondents, SOC was categorised as low (low) and high (lower middle, upper middle, high). Low SOC has been shown to be associated with the risk of type 2 diabetes [4].…”

“…A number of studies suggest that psychosocial stress plays an important role in the development of diabetes (3)(4)(5)(6)(7)(8). Many American Indians live in pervasively adverse social and physical environments that place them at high risk to stress exposure (9,10).…”
