INTRODUCTION Multiple reports have indicated that the prevalence of work-related stress is increasing among academics. This has been attributed to the expanding number of students, the need for efficiency in providing higher quality education, accountability to multiple stakeholders, internal and external factors, and problems in management and workplace communication systems. In spite of the growing realization of the importance of work-related stress, little is known about the subject in Sub-Saharan Africa. In this study, we investigated the prevalence of work-related stress and associated factors in colleges across Eritrea. METHODS This study was a cross-sectional study performed in 2019 in Eritrea. Sample size for this study was calculated using single population proportion formula and simple random sampling technique was used to acquire the study participants. A structured closed-ended questionnaire was subsequently used to collect sociodemographic and other occupation related data. The University and College Union model stress questionnaire was used to assess stress among the study participants. Statistical analysis was conducted using IBM SPSS Statistics version 23. RESULTS Based on the UCU model stress questionnaire, the overall prevalence of stress among college faculty was found to be 49.2%. When assessing the stress related factors, Pearson's correlation test showed participant's stress score was moderately correlated with demand (r=0.37), control (r=0.36) and relations (r=0.32) scores. However weak, the stress score had a statistically significant positive correlation with role, change, and the support domain scores. CONCLUSIONS Work-related stress among faculty members was prevalent in the study setting, as it was found to affect almost half of the study participants. The factors affecting stress can be categorized into three broader domains: uncertainty of career prospect, role confusion and lack of resources.

Introduction: Computer vision syndrome (CVS) is the leading occupational hazard of the 21st century, which causes the critical public health issues in the present era. In developing countries, including Ethiopia, data on the proportion and the causes of CVS are scarce among academic staff for policy conclusions. Accordingly, this study was conducted to determine the prevalence and factors associated with CVS among academic staff at the University of Gondar. Methods: Institution-based cross-sectional study design was conducted from March to April, 2021. A simple random sampling technique was used to select 525 study participants. Data were collected using a pre-tested self-administered structured questionnaire. The collected data were then entered into EpiData version 4.6 and analyzed using STATA version 14 software. The association between dependent and independent variables was computed with a binary logistic regression. Results: The prevalence of CVS was found to be 78.8% out of a total of 500 participants [95% CI (74.95, 82.30)], of which the majority (71.60%) of them were males. Using a computer for more than 9 years [AOR = 1.65, 95% CI (1.01, 2.71)], using visual display terminals [AOR = 2.63, 95% CI (1.60, 4.32)], and working in improper illumination levels (300 and >500 lux) [AOR = 2.47, 95% CI (1.47, 4.33)] increased the risk of CVS, whereas, Using eye droplets [AOR = 0.30, 95% CI (0.15, 0.58)] and taking rest breaks [AOR = 0.55, 95% CI (0.34-0.92)] were protective factors. Conclusion: This study disclosed that CVS was common among academicians. In the current study, the manifestation of CVS was affected by years of computer use, visual display terminals use, workplace illumination level, rest breaks, and eye droplets. Taking rest breaks in between the work, reducing exposure to display screens, use of eye drops, and optimizing workplace illumination levels are recommended to reduce the problem.

Introduction Nigerian university lecturers face a lot of works in the day‐to‐day discharge of their responsibilities as academics. This constitutes a lot of stress for them as documented in the literature. However, literature is scarce on how these lecturers manage their work stress. Thus, the researchers explored the efficacy of rational emotive occupational health coaching (REOHC) on the management of work stress among lecturers. Method A randomised controlled trial group experimental research design was adopted using a sample size of 84 lecturers in Science Education Departments of the sampled universities. An occupational stress index was used in the gathering of necessary data for the study. The REOHC treatment lasted for 12 weeks after which the participants were posttested and a follow‐up measure followed after 3 months of the termination of the treatment. Repeated measures analysis of variance statistical approach was used to analyse the obtained data. Results It was revealed that REOHC was significantly (p < 0.05) effective in the management of work stress in a population of science education lecturers in Nigeria. Conclusion REOHC enables science education lecturers to effectively manage their work stress to maximise their work outputs. This finding implicates the expertise of Educational Evaluators.
