Abstract ObjectivesVarious support measures useful for promoting joint change approaches to the improvement of both shiftworking arrangements and safety and health management systems were reviewed. A particular focus was placed on enterprise-level risk reduction measures linking working hours and management systems. Methods Voluntary industry-based guidelines on night and shift work for department stores and the chemical, automobile and electrical equipment industries were examined. Survey results that had led to the compilation of practicable measures to be included in these guidelines were also examined. The common support measures were then compared with ergonomic checkpoints for plant maintenance work involving irregular nightshifts. On the basis of this analysis, a new night and shift work checklist was designed. Results Both the guidelines and the plant maintenance work checkpoints were found to commonly cover multiple issues including work schedules and various job-related risks. This close link between shiftwork arrangements and risk management was important as shiftworkers in these industries considered teamwork and welfare services to be essential for managing risks associated with night and shift work. Four areas found suitable for participatory improvement by managers and workers were work schedules, ergonomic work tasks, work environment and training. The checklist designed to facilitate participatory change processes covered all these areas. ConclusionsThe checklist developed to describe feasible workplace actions was suitable for integration with comprehensive safety and health management systems and offered valuable opportunities for improving working time arrangements and job content together. In today"s rapidly changing commercial world "retail design" is taking on the great importance than ever before both in terms of selling a company"s products and promoting an organizations" corporate identity (Onwong"a, Mamati, Kangu & Osongo, 2010). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the factors affecting the implementation of health and safety measures in supermarkets in Kenya; A survey of Supermarkets in Kenya. The implementation of health and safety measures at workplaces is minimal and yet it goes without doubt that if properly implemented, workplace accidents, injuries and illness would decrease in number. The research study was thus to facilitate the understanding of the benefit to implementing health and safety measures, thereby enhancing the acceptance in organizations.The study was be guided by the following specific objectives, to establish whether leadership influences the implementation of health and safety measures in supermarkets in Kenya, to find out whether employee training influences the implementation of health and safety measures in supermarkets on Kenya, and to establish whether employee participation influences the implementation of health and safety measures in supermarkets in Kenya. The study employed a descriptive research design (Sekaran, 2006).Data analysis was aided by SPSS Version 17 (Marija, 2008). The target population was the general retail merchandise in Kenya while the study population was Human Resource Department Staff in supermarkets with more than 10 outlets in Kenya. The study was a census of supermarkets with more than 10 outlets and hence the sample size was equal to the study population.Primary data was collected using self administered questionnaires. A pilot test was conducted to test the validity and reliability of the research instruments. The study employed descriptive statistics and data analysis was performed using both qualitative and quantitative techniques.The final findings were presented using pie charts and statistical tables. This study will be of value to the human resource managers of the general retail merchandise industry, the government, research institutions, scholars and other private institutions.

Outcomes for facilitators of workplace environment improvement applying a participatory approach

Objectives The purpose of this study was to determine changes in awareness, behavior, and relationships among facilitators who were involved in facilitating the conduct of the participatory workplace improvement program and to examine the facilitators' outcomes as a result of their active involvement in the program. The outcome components were also examined in relationship to their associations with various factors. Methods An anonymous self‐administered questionnaire survey was conducted for 83 facilitators. Exploratory factor analysis was applied to determine the facilitators' outcomes. The relationship between those elements which influenced the outcomes was taken into account by means of hierarchal multiple regression analysis. Results The outcomes for facilitators consisted of four sub‐concepts: “knowing practical ways and strategies to ensure full participation,” “building confidence and self‐development,” “improving safety and health‐risk sensitivity,” and “gaining better‐than‐expected results based on developing relationships with workers.” According to the results of hierarchal multiple regression analysis, facilitators' outcomes were significantly associated with the realization of creativity, sense of solution for safety and health issues, and facilitators' involvement. Conclusions It is suggested that the role of a facilitator dynamically changes through a participatory workplace improvement program as a key person in the workplace. Supporting acting facilitators' initiatives in the process of workplace improvement programs, as well as promoting the active involvement of workers and managers were considered useful for effective implementation of workplace improvement programs.
