Wool: Structure, Properties, and Processing

Abstract: Wool, the fibrous coating from sheep, is the most important animal fiber used by the textile industry. It has been used continuously for several thousand years, the earliest type of fabric made from wool probably being a felt. Although the relative importance of wool as a textile fiber has declined with the increasing use of synthetic fibers, it remains important in some sectors of the market. This article discusses raw wool specification, fiber growth, its complex morphological and chemical structure, and the… Show more

“…The re-combed and shrink-resist treated wool roving was utilized for preparing multiples of staple yarns (AgResearch Ltd.), the specifications of which are presented in Table 1. The physical and mechanical properties of wool fibers are influenced by their moisture regain and temperature, 24 which relate to the ambient temperature and relative humidity. In order to influence the performance of wool fibers during yarn formation, as well as the properties of resultant yarns, all roving were conditioned before spinning for about 24 h at the standard environment of 20AE2 C and 65AE2% relative humidity.…”

“…Due to this, it has a high level of thermal insulation. Wool is the fibrous coating from sheep (Figure 2), is the most important animal fiber used by the textile industry (Rippon et al, 2016). Wool absorbs up to 40% moisture and stays dry.…”

“…As such, there has been very limited work from an Irish perspective on the amount, type, quality or chemical composition of sheep wool. The global production systems for sheep considerably vary, especially across Europe, due primarily to differences in environmental and climatic conditions, breed types, soil and forage types, animal nutrition, and farm management practices [3][4][5]. Consequentially, research outputs and information on sheep wool composition from one country, breed or system may not be relevant or applicable in others.…”
