WOOD UTILIZATION OF Eucalyptus grandis IN STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS: DENSITIES AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES

Abstract: Over the years, the species of eucalyptus has become a multipurpose raw material. In addition, the most relevant aspect of the use for various purposes is related to the production of a high quality wood, coming from short duration plantations, which is fundamental to the current demand of the industries. However, its use in civil construction has not yet reached a level of importance, due to the low knowledge of many of its resistance properties and the consequent popular fear in the use of reforestation wood… Show more

“…Eucalyptus microcorys was mechanically superior to some eucalypts evaluated in other wood characterization studies, for example, alba (Nogueira et al, 2019b), camaldulensis (Nogueira et al, 2018c), grandis (Lahr et al, 2018), maidenii (Nogueira et al, 2018b), saligna (Nogueira et al, 2019a), umbra (Nogueira et al, 2018a), and urophylla (Lahr et al, 2017). Still, this wood species reached performances similar to tereticornis variety studied by Nogueira et al, (2020).…”

“…Due to its characteristics of fast-growing and various usages, E. grandis has become a global renewable resource of fiber and energy. Eucalyptus grandis also has strong adaptability, especially to salt and drought stresses, making it an ideal ecological plant species being planted in a wide range of areas (Young, 1983 ; Lahr et al, 2018 ; Chen et al, 2020b ). Moreover, its metabolites, for example, terpenes acting as defensive substance, are now used as unique pharmaceutical oils.…”

“…As far as can be researched, no studies have encountered effect of different drying climates on the properties of Eucalyptus wood. Closest to the subject of this study, mechanical properties of Eucalyptus urophylla wood (Lahr et al 2017) and Eucalyptus grandis wood (Lahr et al 2018) of different moisture (12 %, 30 %) levels were investigated. Eventually, Lahr et al (2018) found that mechanical properties were significantly affected by moisture content, and the behavior pattern consisted in increasing the values of the properties with reduction of moisture content.…”
