The objective of the study presented here was to evaluate the influence of two contrasting silvicultural regimes on the structural characteristics and mechanical properties of different wood tissue types at different heights in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) trees, and reasons for these differences. Wood samples were taken from two stands (a dense 85-year-old stand established by direct seeding and a 56-year-old widely spaced stand established by planting, designated SDR and PWR, respectively in the boreal zone of Sweden). The wood properties associated with the examined silvicultural regimes differed, in terms of both structural characteristics (with up to fivefold differences between SDR and PWR) and mechanical properties (with up to almost threefold differences between SDR and PWR). Differences between the regimes were highest for stiffness, followed by strength and hardness properties and lowest for relative stiffness after 1000 h of loading (creep) (with higher parameter values for SDR than for PWR in each case). The rankings could be explained by differences among the mechanical properties in their sensitivity to maturation of wood characteristics. In conclusion, silvicultural regimes have great potential to regulate wood structural characteristics and mechanical properties, apparently due to the influences of the green crown and growth rate on the vascular cambium, the strength of which vary throughout the rotation period. A silvicultural regime could therefore be seen as a tool that can be used to select material qualities and to make wood a more homogenous material for engineers.

In the past decades, the field of wood science and technology (WST) in the world has experienced significant changes in response to changes in resources, environments, technologies, and other emerging issues. WST in China is becoming a strong scientific discipline and has had an obvious impact on the global WST research and development (R&D) activities. In this article, a comprehensive review of the recent WST R&D advances in China is presented. Among various contributing factors, the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), a state funding agency for basic research, has played a critical role in helping to shape up the Chinese R&D activities in the field. NSFC funding information in the WST field from 1988 to 2014, including the number of approved projects, funding level, and supported program categories, was retrieved and analyzed. The positive roles of NSFC in supporting free exploration, cultivating research teams and youth talents, and promoting WST R&D are demonstrated. Hot spots in some focused research areas, key advances in the field, challenges, and future prospect of the Chinese WST development are outlined.

Thirteen wood parameters were predicted using near infrared (NIR) spectra in the range 780-2380 nm modelled by biorthogonal partial least squares regression. The analysis of parameters and NIR measurements was done on clearwood samples from the base and midstem of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) from trees at two sites. Calibrations based on the measured parameters at seven growth rings (cambial age ranging between 6 and 42 years) could be divided into three groups: (i) the best accuracy was found for longitudinal modulus of elasticity (r > 0.9) followed by bending, compression, and cell length (0.8 < r < 0.9); (ii) microfibril angle, longitudinal hardness, proportion of latewood, and creep with correlations in the range of 0.7-0.8; and (iii) tangential hardness, cell diameter, and cell wall thickness with 0.4 < r < 0.7. It was also shown that juvenile (cambial age 20 years) and mature wood can be classified using NIR techniques.Résumé : La régression bi-orthogonale partielle par les moindres carrés a été utilisée pour modéliser 13 paramètres du bois à l'aide de spectres de transmittance dans les longueurs d'onde allant de 780 à 2380 nm dans le proche infrarouge (PIR). L'analyse des paramètres et des mesures de transmittance dans le PIR a été réalisée sur des échantillons de bois sain provenant de la base du tronc et de la portion intermédiaire de la cime de tiges de pin sylvestre (Pinus sylvestris L.) récoltées dans deux stations. Les étalonnages basés sur la mesure des paramètres dans sept cernes annuels (âge cambial variant de 6 à 42 ans) pouvaient être divisés en trois groupes : (i) la plus grande précision a été obtenue pour le module d'élasticité longitudinal (r > 0,9) suivi par la flexion, la compression et la longueur des cellules (0,8 < r < 0,9), (ii) l'angle des microfibrilles, la dureté longitudinale, la proportion de bois final et le fluage de retour avaient un coefficient de corré-lation de 0,7-0,8 et (iii) la dureté tangentielle, le diamètre des cellules et l'épaisseur des parois cellulaires avaient un coefficient de corrélation variant entre 0,4 et 0,7. Nous avons aussi montré que l'utilisation de la transmittance dans le PIR permet de distinguer le bois juvénile (âge cambial 20 ans) du bois mature.[Traduit par la Rédaction]
