The diagnosis of dermatological diseases requires cytological, dermatoscopic, histopathological examinations, some laboratory tests, and radiology imaging in addition to clinical examination. However, these tests are quite important, not only in time of diagnosis, but also in patient follow ups and determining the therapeutic approach. In this article, the diagnostic tests are reviewed that may help to dermatologists in detecting the treatment of dermatological diseases.

Dermatoscopy is a non-invasive and cost-efficient imaging technique augmenting clinical examination in neoplastic and non-neoplastic dermatoses. Recently, novel dermatoscopic techniques based on principles of reflectance/absorption and excited fluorescence have been developed. However, comprehensive data on their applications are sparse, and terminology is inconsistent. In this systematic review, we addressed the principles of ultraviolet (UV) imaging and proposed categorization based on spectral characteristics and signal acquisition, as well as discussed documented and potential clinical applications, safety measures during examination, and limitations associated with reflectance and fluorescence dermatoscopy. A literature search was conducted in the PubMed medical database until 2 December 2023 according to PRISMA guidelines, and 28 papers fit the scope of this review, whereas additional relevant articles were included to provide broader context regarding the chosen terminology, chromophores described, safety of sub-UV/UV, and regulations for light-emitting devices. UV and sub-UV dermatoscopy, categorized into different methods on the basis of the emitted wavelength and signal acquisition process (reflectance versus fluorescence), augment conventional dermatoscopy by optimizing safety margins in melanoma, facilitating early detection of tumor recurrence, and enhancing visualization in non-neoplastic conditions, including pigmentation disorders, intertrigo, papulo-desquamative dermatoses, and beyond. The review highlights the limitations of these techniques, including difficulty in differentiating melanin from hemoglobin, challenges in evaluating uneven surfaces, and artifacts. Although UV dermatoscopy complements conventional dermatoscopy, clinicians should be aware of their peculiarities, artifacts, limitations, and safety concerns to optimize their diagnostic accuracy and ensure patient’s safety. Introduction: Melasma is main cause of facial hyperchromia and has a significant psychosocial impact. Wood's lamp has been a useful device to estimate the depth of melanin determined by lightinduced fluorescence. A dermoscope enables a clear visualization of pigments distribution, and the color variation of melanin will depend on its location within the skin. Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted at the outpatient section of the Department of Dermatology of a tertiary care teaching hospital. A total of 120 patients were enrolled for a duration of 1 year. Patients diagnosed to have melasma on clinical grounds were enrolled after considering various inclusion and exclusion criteria. Result: On clinical examination, 47 patients had centrofacial distribution and 73 had malar distribution of melisma. On Wood's lamp 51 patients showed complete enhancement hence classified as epidermal, 63 patients had no enhancement hence classified as dermal and 6 patients showed few areas of enhancement and hence classified as mixed melasma. On dermoscopy, 48 patients showed regular pigment network with a brownish homogeneous pigmentation hence classified as epidermal, 61 patients showed Irregular network with bluish grey pigmentation hence classified as dermal and 11 patients showed features of both epidermal and dermal and hence classified as mixed melasma. Conclusion:In the analysis of correlation between Dermoscopy and Wood's lamp in classification of Melasma, the results showed substantial discordance between the methods. Based on the principles of Dermoscopic examination, this method applicable, more appropriate and helpful for routine diagnosis, assessment and monitoring of patients with melasma.
