Wood-mineral wool hybrid particleboards

Abstract: Abstract. The objective of this work was to compound mineral wool with wood particles in the production of particleboards of reduced flammability. Three series of boards with various contents of mineral wool (10, 20, 30 wt%) were successfully manufactured using ureaformaldehyde resin as binder. Thickness swelling, mechanical and thermal properties as well as ignitability of the boards were assessed. It occurred that reduced ignitability is accompanied by a decrease in mechanical performance.

“…The addition of glycerol is dualpurposed: it works as a plasticizer and it improves the films' hygroscopicity (because of glycerol's three hydroxyl groups). [23] DMSO acts as a secondary dopant by stretching the PEDOT coils, therefore increasing the interchain interactions. [24] The resulting material conforms easily, sticks to most common surfaces, and is very resilient to deformations.…”

“…Possible alternative solutions for the recycling of mineral wool waste include for example the utilization of mineral wool waste in cement-based composites [20] composite ceramics [21] or wood fiber composites [22]. A new solution for the recycling of mineral wool waste could be the utilization of the waste as filler in wood polymer composites.…”

“…A new solution for the recycling of mineral wool waste could be the utilization of the waste as filler in wood polymer composites. Its problem is that if the interfacial adhesion between the mineral wool fibers and polypropylene matrix can be improved, many of the mechanical properties could be improved as well [22]. This could be achieved via the addition of a different coupling agent or surface treatment of the mineral wool fibers.…”

“…Mineral additives have been used in wood-based panels manufacturing with success, primarily to achieve high mechanical strength, high thermal and sound insulation, or fire retardancy of wood-based panel products (Scheiding 2002, Mamiński et al 2011. Recently, the use of synthetic zeolite Y, modified with aminopropyl groups has also shown utility to reduce formaldehyde emissions from particleboards (Anonymous 2011).…”
