Wood dust exposure and risk of sinonasal cancer development

Abstract: The incidence of sinonasal cancers (SNCs) is quite rare; they contribute to 0,16% of all malignant tumors and to 3% among head and neck cancers. The survival rate remains poor-it is 59.5% for 5 years. The two most common subtypes are squamous-cell carcinoma (SCC) and adenocarcinoma (ADC). Both subtypes of SNC are associated to occupational exposures. Main risk factors for SNC include chemical components, wood and textile dusts, nickel and chromium, welding fumes. Thus, people doing particular jobs are at highe… Show more

“…He went on to describe a peculiar form of asthma in those who processed cotton, flax and hemp. He said the dust he observed in their preparation “causes workers to cough constantly.” Exposure to dust increases the prevalence of respiratory diseases such as extrinsic allergic alveolitis [ 61 , 62 ], asthma symptoms [ 63 , 64 ], chronic bronchitis [ 65 ], organic dust toxic syndrome [ 66 ], chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [ 67 , 68 ], and the incidence of cancer is increased [ 69 , 70 ].…”
