Wood Biomass Resources in Poland Depending on Forest Structure and Industrial Processing of Wood Raw Material

Abstract: (1) Wood is a widely available raw material on the market, which satisfies the industrial demand and which is used both as a source of biomass for the wood materials industry in a broad sense and for energy-supplying purposes. These areas prove the functional values and the possibilities of the directional use of low-quality wood products. One of the factors influencing the overall balance of the wood biomass is the form and quality of the wood material that cannot be further processed mechanically. This study… Show more

“…All biomass, except for olive kernels, came from Poland. European countries including Poland have well-developed forestry, furniture and food processing industries, which generate significant amounts of organic waste [32][33][34]. Some of them are used for energy purposes by both professional and industrial power plants, wood pellet producers and individual recipients, e.g., in the form of pellets (domestic boilers).…”

“…The accelerated implementation of renewable energy sources and improved efficiency in the European Union are expected to reduce the demand for natural gas and oil by 20% and coal by 50% in this decade. The EU's strategy for renewable resources aims to limit CO 2 emissions and achieve energy self-sufficiency by reducing the consumption of fossil fuels, requiring countries to transform their energy systems by increasing the share of renewable energy [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]. Bioenergy remains the predominant source of renewable energy in the EU in terms of final gross consumption, despite the rapid growth of wind and solar energy in the last decade.…”

“…Green energy in Poland is mainly wind farms [ 23 ], which contributed more than 9.0 % to electricity production, and other renewable sources more than 4,0 % (including water 1.1 %, photovoltaics 2.9 %) [ 24 ]. In Poland, the main sources of woody biomass are forestry and the wood and paper industry [ [25] , [26] , [27] ]. From 2018 to 2020, approximately 7.5 million m 3 of wood used for energy production was harvested annually in Polish forests, destined for both individual consumers and industry [ 28 ].…”
