Women's Labour and Mechanization in Mediterranean Greenhouse Farming

Abstract: This paper analyses differences in productivity by worker's gender in greenhouse agricultural work, using time-study techniques applied to indoor tomato cultivation in Spain. The results show that women had on average a 107.5% greater efficiency compared with men, and that this was evident across all tasks subject to evaluation. Although they were rarely assigned to them due to gender stereotyping, the performance of female workers in tasks involving machinery operation, such as a motorized elevated platform, … Show more

“…However, low-cost solutions are being used in various sectors with very good results, for example in the field of construction, where energy efficiencies in buildings are obtained simply by adopting bioclimatic architectural measures [55,56]. In agricultural topics several low-cost solutions can be found that make agricultural systems more sustainable from an economic [57], environmental [58], and social point of view [59]. This report aims to record the strong interconnections between low-cost technologies and the economic and environmental dimensions of sustainability from the perspective of being advantageous to strategies promoting national and regional economic growth.…”

“…It is worth remembering that many of the factors restricting male farmers from adopting sustainable and productive practices constrain women even more. The barriers they face because of their gender limit their ability to innovate and be more productive (Manzano-Agugliaro et al, 2013).…”

“…Agronomy also deals with the selection of suitable crop varieties, i.e., those best suited to the particular conditions of the environment [8,9], as well as the adoption of the most effective production system [10], the choice of the most suitable growing techniques [11], the selection of appropriate plant protection measures [12,13], the adoption of the most efficient harvesting methods both in terms of quantity and quality [14,15], and the choice of the most appropriate post-harvest technologies [16,17]. This is done by considering the management of inputs, such as labor, seeds, fertilizers, facilities, and machinery [18].…”
