Over half of women in the United States report urinary incontinence (UI). This condition can be treated conservatively, but many people do not seek treatment. The current correlational study assessed women’s knowledge of UI. Specifically, we investigated the relationships between knowledge level about UI and quality of life (QoL), and between severity level of UI and QoL. A convenience cross-sectional sample of 39 older women was obtained from two YMCA locations. Data were analyzed using the Spearman rank-order correlation coefficient. A significant relationship was found between severity of UI and QoL, rs = −.73, p < .001; no relationship was found between knowledge level of UI and QoL, rs = .24, p = .13. Results suggested women’s knowledge about the causes of UI and conservative therapy is limited. Occupational therapists need to address UI with their patients and educate them about treatment options and availability.

IntroductionThe aim of the study was to determine the effect of low level laser applied for 3 months, 2 sessions per week, on pelvic floor muscles and fascia compared with a pelvic floor exercise program in patients with stress urinary incontinence.MethodsThe randomized controlled trial involved 30 patients with stress urinary incontinence and with pelvic floor muscle strength not less than grade 1 on the Oxford scale. They were assigned to 2 equal groups. The experimental group received low level laser for 15 minutes and a pelvic floor muscle exercise program for 30 minutes, 2 sessions per week, for 12 weeks; the control group only received the pelvic floor muscle exercise program for 30 minutes, 2 sessions per week, for 12 weeks. The pelvic floor muscles were evaluated before and after treatment with a Neen Peritone perineometer and the Modified Oxford Grading Scale. The Revised Urinary Incontinence Scale served to assess incontinence severity before and after treatment.ResultsThe statistical analysis indicated a significant increase in pelvic floor muscle strength (p < 0.05), a significant improvement of the grade muscle test of pelvic floor muscles (p < 0.05), and a significant reduction of Revised Urinary Incontinence Scale score (p < 0.05) after treatment compared with pre-treatment status in both groups. Also, there was a significant improvement in all dependent variables in favour of the experimental group.ConclusionsLow level laser may be an effective intervention in treating stress urinary incontinence and improving pelvic floor muscle strength and fascia.

Aim: Healthcare seeking by women with urinary incontinence is affected by many factors. However, the effect of pelvic floor awareness and knowledge on seeking health care is not clear. We aimed to investigate the relationship between pelvic floor awareness, urinary incontinence (UI) and pelvic floor knowledge levels and healthcare seeking in women with incontinence. Methods: A total of 178 women, 96 incontinent and 82 continent, were included in the study. The presence of UI was evaluated with Incontinence Questionnaires (3IQ), incontinence knowledge level with the Prolapse and Incontinence Knowledge Questionnaire (PIKQ-UI), and pelvic floor knowledge with the Pelvic Floor Health Knowledge Quiz (PFHKQ). Pelvic floor awareness and treatment seeking were measured with open-ended questions compiled from the literature. The Mann Whitney U, Chi-square and Kruskal Wallis tests were used. A value of p<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: There were significant differences between the PIKQ-UI scores of incontinent women who answered yes or no to questions about pelvic floor awareness (p<.05) and seeking health care (p=0.039). The PIKQ-UI scores of incontinent women were higher than those of continent women (p=0.033). Incontinent and continent women had similar PFHKQ scores (p>0.05). A difference was observed in the purpose of seeking information about the pelvic floor between women with and without incontinence (p=0.002). Conclusions: The knowledge level of incontinent women with pelvic floor awareness and who seek health care was higher than that of incontinent women without pelvic floor awareness and who do not seek health care. Pelvic floor awareness in incontinent women may contribute to healthcare seeking and increase the level of knowledge about incontinence and pelvic floor.
