Despite ample evidence of women's value, ensuring gender equity–equality is a major challenge for police departments worldwide. Using survey data gathered from a sample of 455 male and female police officers in the Kenya Police Service, this study examines the non-western plights of women in policing and describes a theory change to formulate gender-equity strategies for improved recruitment and retention of women in police service. Findings indicate that women officers can undertake most tasks better than or to the same degree as men, except for a small proportion of line duties, mirroring the literature on women in policing internationally. However, family commitments, an emphasis on physical strength for promotion, performance based on male standards, and male supervisors’ attitudes present severe challenges for women in the police service, reflecting the organizational climate and prevailing cultural norms. Implications for theory, policy and research are discussed.

Women's police stations that are designed to receive victims of gender-based violence first emerged in Latin America in the 1980s. In Argentina, these stations have unique aspects like multidisciplinary staffing that could guide responses elsewhere. Police responses to domestic and family violence (DFV) in Australia have continually failed victims and require much improvement. Responses combining police and other services are not completely alien to Australia, and are not too dissimilar from women's police stations. We undertook a survey of Australian police (n=78) to assess which aspects of Argentina's stations could inform new approaches to DFV policing. Our survey finds that Australian police support some aspects of this approach to policing DFV, such as multidisciplinary stations (74%). There was significantly less support for stations staffed predominantly by women (19%). Combined with review of evaluations of Australian co-locational responses, research implications for practice suggest a broader trial of co-locational responses in Australia.

El ingreso de las mujeres a la policía, una ocupación tradicionalmente masculina, ha sido teorizada casi enteramente a través de los lentes teóricos del feminismo liberal donde la igualdad con los hombres es el objetivo final. Desde este punto de vista teórico, las comisarías de la mujer en el Sur Global creadas específicamente para responder a la violencia de género han sido conceptualizada como vestigios del pasado. Nosotros argumentamos que esa interpretación está basada en una epistemología global que privilegia al Norte Global como referencia normativa a partir de la cual definir el progreso. Enmarcados en la criminología del sur, ofrecemos una forma alternativa de teorizar el progreso de las mujeres en la policía empleando las comisarías de la mujer que emergieron en América Latina en los 1980s, específicamente aquella en la Provincia de Buenos Aires, Argentina.
