In the late 1630s, the court poet William Davenant applied his literary energies to Madagascar, an island off the eastern coast of Africa: ‘Thus in a dreame, I did adventure out…/Betweene the Southern Tropick and the Line’. While previous scholarship has highlighted the poem's ambiguous attitude towards empire, focusing on the rising interest in global travel and eastern diplomacy at Charles I's court, this article revisits the poem's genre and social context by focusing on its specific engagement with colonization. In doing so, it establishes Madagascar as an important example of how cavalier poets helped shape the aesthetics of early Stuart colonialism at court. The use of fancy – explored here through poetic style and wit sociability, female colonial networks at Henrietta Maria's court, and real and imagined objects, including Malagasy artefacts – becomes key to reconciling the seeming incongruities between the poem's lover‐conquerors and the colonial aspirations that underpinned the project.

Стаття дослiджує складну проблематику впливу новітніх наукових розвідок історичної антропології на утворення парадигми сучасної фiлософії icторії. Методологiя даної праці заснована на реалізації принципів комплементарностi, структурностi, дiалогiчностi. У студії зазначеної проблематики були залучені методи: філософської герменевтики, системноструктурний, мiждисциплiнарний. Новітні студії з історичної антропології проявляють теоретичну сутність сучасної філософії історії. Вона реалізується через такі пізнавальні площини осмислення історично-антропологічними розвідками змісту і значущості багатоаспектної історичної динаміки, як «історія ментальностей», «мікроісторія», «історія жінок», «нова культурна історія», «історія ідентичності», «історія пам’яті», історія ментальних аспектів політичних процесів. Сутність філософсько-історичної основи студій з «історії ментальностей» полягає в осмисленні психологічного і культурного впливу на соціуми минулого магічних уявлень, легенд та вірувань та їх ролі у суспільному розвитку. Вона проявляється також у аналізі сприймання суспільcтвами різних історичних епох феномена дитинства та їх ставлення до дітей. Наукові розвідки з «мікроісторії» розподіляються на дослідження життєвого шляху окремих людей, сімей та історії мешканців локальних громад, які існували й діяли у різні часи минулого. Вони включають і реконструкцію, й осмислення значущості великих сімей у соціокультурному розвиткові минулих епох. Новітні історично-антропологічні студії з «історії жінок» утворюють три теоретичні піднапрями. Відповідно до них належить аналіз соціокультурної специфіки шлюбних стосунків у минулі епохи, вивчення ролі жінок у соціально-економічному розвиткові суспільства, загальні дослідження, які орієнтовані на розуміння різноманітних ментальних аспектів участі жінок у історичній динаміці. Дослідження у царині «нової культурної історії» вивчають психологічно-культурний горизонт історично-культурних процесів та їх вплив на динаміку суспільств минулого. Аналіз кола наукових проблем, пов’язаних з реконструкцією і осмисленням уявлень про власні соціокультурні особливості різноманітних соціальних груп і соціумів минулих епох, складає основу напряму «історії ідентичності» новітніх історично-антропологічних студій. Дослідження у проблемному полі «історії пам’яті» реалізуються за трьома когнітивними рівнями. На мікрорівні відбувається аналіз пам’яті про минуле окремих особистостей та невеликих спільнот. На мезорівні здійснюється вивчення матеріальних об’єктів, котрі виступають символами історичних подій та генерують і підтримують пам’ять про них у певних соціумах. На мегарівні реалізуються студії напрямів функціонування історичної пам’яті та її складових (культурних міфів) і їх вплив на динаміку «локальних цивілізацій». Наукові розвідки з історії ментальних аспектів політичних процесів осмислюють вплив бачення суспільством політичних процесів та їх емоційного сприймання на особливості і розвиток політики минулого. Новітні студії історичної антропології як сучасної філософії історії суттєво сприяють розумінню ментально-культурних причин і чинників динаміки минулого, реконструкції і релевантному аналізу людського виміру складних історичних процесів.

Purpose. The paper seeks to prove the thesis of the significance and importance of the theories and methodological approaches of historical anthropology, which are aimed at understanding the meanings, essence and value systems of human existence in the past for philosophical anthropology. The study of this problem is relevant for understanding the evolution of human identity with philosophical and anthropological concepts, understanding the essence of one’s own existence and attitude to the world. Theoretical basis. The author conducts research in the analysis of the reflexive field of philosophical anthropology and related disciplines, in particular historical anthropology, implemented in the philosophical literature of recent centuries, that is, in the space of non-classical and modern philosophical thought. Originality. I raise and substantiate the theoretical question of the scientific significance of the analysis of human existence in the past thanks to the involvement of theoretical approaches and concepts formed in the reflexive field of modern historical and anthropological research. This forms the prerequisites for understanding complex and interdisciplinary explorations of the essence and cultural and spiritual values of human existence. I analyse the problems of the work in the context of the concept of the incompleteness of the project of philosophical anthropology without its involvement in the theoretical achievements of historical-anthropological investigations. Conclusions. In my opinion, modern historical and anthropological studies of the essence and meanings of being a person of the past form an extensive theoretical system. It is realized through such theoretical aspects of comprehension of human existence by historical and anthropological studies as "history of mentalities", "microhistory", "history of women", "new cultural history", "history of identity", "history of memory", history of mental aspects of political processes. Methodological approaches and concepts of modern historical anthropology form the basis of mental reconstruction and understanding of the mental and cultural causes and factors of human existence, thanks to the analysis of the evolution of the worldview, behaviour, outlook, various forms of individual and social activity of the individual.
