This study examines the impact of micro financing on life in the rural areas using Edo North and Central Regions of Nigeria as a case study. The objective of the study is to examine the impact of micro financing on poverty alleviation, unemployment, living standards and small and medium enterprises growth. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data and the collected data were analyzed using the maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) technique of the ordered logistic regression. The results of the analysis show that micro financing in the region has a significant positive effect on poverty alleviation; and small medium enterprises growth; a negative and significant effect on unemployment and a negative but insignificant effect on poor living standards. The study recommends that: governments should continue to encourage micro financing institutions through more tax incentives so that their capacity to reduce poverty and able to contribute meaningfully to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of reducing poverty can be enhanced; to foster employment generation by small and medium enterprises, governments should look for ways to encourage SMEs by channeling more financial assistance through microfinancing institutions to them with more liberal terms; governments and financing institutions should mainstream on providing more technical assistance to SMEs to enhance their ability to better living standards; to boost growth among SMEs, the firms should also look closely at financing growth through internal sources such as retained earnings.

Vocational Training and Youth Empowerment in Nigeria: Evidence from Informal Sector Operators’ Activity in Gombe Metropolis

This study was conducted to empirically examine the role of the informal sector in youths’ empowerment in Gombe metropolis. A structured questionnaire was used to gather first-hand information on variables of interest and both descriptive statistic and ordered logistic regression analysis were conducted to achieve the major and specific objectives of the study. The primary objectives of the study include to examine (i) how does Vocational training among informal sector operators influence youth empowerment in Gombe metropolis; (ii) how does customers' patronage of the informal sector's services influence youth empowerment in Gombe metropolis; and (iii) how does capital requirement among informal sector operators influence youth empowerment in Gombe metropolis. Empirical results obtained from the study indicated that Vocational training among informal sector operators has a positive and significant influence on the likelihood of youths empowerment in Gombe metropolis of Gombe state; customers' patronage, as well as capital requirements, were also found to have a positive and significant influence on youths’ empowerment in Gombe metropolis; and all the control variables included in the model (except gender) also have positive and significant probability on youth empowerment in Gombe metropolis. We conclude by presenting concluding remarks and policy implications for decision-making toward repositioning technical and vocational education in Nigeria to effectively curb incessant overdependence on the government for job creation in Nigeria.

The results of this normative research article are the contents of the inaugural speech by Professor Dr. Dra. Andi Cahaya, M.Sc., who discussed "repositioning" or revitalizing the fishermen and rural economies to accelerate poverty reduction in the digital era. The revitalization of the fishermen's economy as the focus of the blue revolution program locus is a zine-qua-non promoted by the current government to accompany the successful green revolution program. Fishermen poverty is a multi-dimensional problem that requires a comprehensive solution. The type of normative research or literature study is used to collect data, information, and knowledge about the focus of the research locus to be analyzed descriptively. The results of the study found that the causes of poverty are not the same in all regions, even if the size or scale varies depending on local conditions so poverty alleviation strategies cannot be generalized to all regions or all sectors. The poverty experienced by rural fishermen cannot be equated with the measure of poverty in urban communities. Therefore, fishermen and rural poverty alleviation programs require a revitalization strategy through increasing skills and mastery of information and communication technology (ICT) for actors to be able to improve the quality of their business. In addition, simultaneous cultural and structural revitalization is needed to provide a way to alleviate fishermen and rural poverty in the context of achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) proclaimed by the Indonesian government.
