Background: Lung cancer is a major cause of Korean female mortality and is clearly associated with smoking. The Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES IV-2,3), which included both self-reports of smoking and urinary cotinine data, revealed a significant discrepancy between the prevalence of self-reported and biochemically-verified female smokers. The factors associated with accurate self-reporting of current smoking status remain poorly understood, however. Materials and Methods: We assessed the prevalence of smoking in KNHANES using both self-report and urinary cotinine data. Subsequently, using univariate and multivariate tests, we assessed whether age, intensity of smoking, marital status, relationship with cohabitants, education, occupation, residential area, or annual household income were associated with inaccurate selfreporting in Korean females. AmAç: Tütün ile mücadele yöntemleri arasında toplumun bilgilendirilmesi önemli bir yere sahiptir. En yeni bilgilendirme yöntemler-den birisi televizyonda tütün karşıtı reklam filmlerinin gösterilme-sidir. Ülkemizde Sağlık Bakanlığı tütünün sağlık etkileri hakkında halkı bilgilendirmek amacıyla televizyonda sigara karşıtı filmleri başlatmıştır. Bu çalışmada kamu çalışanlarının televizyondaki tü-tün karşıtı reklamlar hakkındaki bazı görüşlerini öğrenmek amacıyla yapılmıştır.GEREç VE YÖNTEmLER: Bu tanımlayıcı çalışma sırasında bir devlet kuruluşunda çalışan 202 idari personele ulaşılmıştır. Araştırma sırasında araştırmacılar tarafından geliştirilen anket formu yüz yüze anket uygulama tekniği ile uygulanmıştır. Anket uygulaması sırasında katılımcılara filmleri hatırlatan fotoğraflar gösterilmiştir.BULGULAR: Katılımcılara bu resimlerin herhangi bir televizyon reklamı hatırlatma durumu sorulmuştur. Katılımcıların çoğu erkek ve lise ve üstü öğrenim düzeyine sahiptirler. Ortalama yaşları 40±8.7 yıldır. Katılımcıların yaklaşık yarısı sigara kullanmaktadır (%45.5). Erkekler arasında sigara kullanma sıklığı %45.9 iken kadınlarda bu oran %41.2'dir. Tütün karşıtı filmleri izledikten sonra en fazla hissedildiği belirtilen duygu "üzgün olma"dır (%85.3). Katılımcılar tütün karşıtı filmlerin sigara bırakmayı motive ettiğini (%75.5) ve bu filmlerin insanları tütünün sağlık etkileri hakkında bilgilendirdiğini (%85.7) düşünmektedirler. Her 10 sigara kullanandan altısı sigara bırakmayı düşünmekte ve 3 kişi sigara kullanmayı bırakmıştır.SONUç: Tütün karşıtı reklam filmleri insanları tütünün zararları hakkında bilgilendirme ve sigara bırakma hakkında motive ettiği düşünülmektedir. One of the newest information techniques is anti-tobacco advertisements on TV. The Ministry of Health in Turkey has initiated anti-tobacco advertisements on TV to inform the community about the health effects of tobacco. This study aimed to identify some opinions of government employees about anti-tobacco advertisements. mATERIAL AND mEThODS:In this descriptive study, 202 administrative employees working at a governmental institution were reached. The questionnaire developed by the researchers was applied to the participants by using face-to-face interview techniques. During the interview, the picture of a moment from the advertisement was shown to the participants. The participants were asked if the picture reminded them of any advertisement on TV. RESULTS:Most of the participants were men who had graduated from high school or university. Their mean age was 40±8.7. Almost half of the participants were smokers (45.5%). The prevalence of smoking among men was 45.9%, compared to 41.2% for women. The most common emotion felt after watching the antitobacco films was "sorry" (85.3%).
