Women and Sexually Transmitted Infections in Africa

Abstract: Despite efforts to control the spread of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), these infections are still highly prevalent in the developing world, especially in Africa where the prevalence and incidence of Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is also very high. Unfortunately, women bear the disproportionate burden of both STIs and HIV in this region. Early diagnosis, treatment and prevention of STIs is therefore crucial in this population given the strong evidence that some STIs have been shown to facilitate … Show more

“…The study highlighted variations among the different PTC levels in the way they were structured, and in their approaches to formulary management. Concerns are important to address given the high prevalence of infectious diseases as well as non-communicable diseases in South Africa, including hypertension and obesity, which is growing adding to the cost public health cost burden [29][30][31][32][33][34]. Encouragingly, the activities of the PTCs in the Gauteng Province were similar to the stipulations in both WHO [23] and the Provincial Guidelines [24].…”

“…This scoping review aims to map evidence on the types of specimens and laboratory assays used in self-sampling interventions for STIs in women. Since research has shown that women, particularly those in LMICs, are disproportionately affected by this pandemic (21), this research will focus on STIs studies in women. Studies that include research on selfsampling interventions for STIs will be included.…”

“…Upon such cross-validation, this tool could be used for the evaluation of intervention trials aimed at increasing condom use toward reducing the risk of HIV, since persistent condom use reduces the risk of contracting HIV (e.g. Mansergh et al, 2015 ; Ramjee et al, 2015 ; Smith et al, 2015 ).…”

“…Studies show that persistent condom use reduces the risk of contracting human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) (Mansergh, Herbst, Mimiaga, & Holman, 2015 ; Ramjee, Abbai, & Naidoo, 2015 ; Smith, Herbst, Zhang, & Rose, 2015 ; Weller & Davis-Beaty, 2002 ); hence, this is a major way to prevent HIV, worldwide. However, the precise prevalence of condom use is hard to determine since studies differ in their method of assessment, sampling, culture, age, gender, risk group, and epoch, amongst other factors.…”
