“…Similarly, in reviewing 2,670 IPV cases, Melton and Belknap (2003) found that African Americans were overrepresented. A number of explanations for this cultural disparity have been considered, including increased poverty (Greenfeld et al, 1998), reduced socioeconomic status (Hampton & Gelles, 1994), mandatory arrest and proarrest laws (Joseph, 1997), exposure to societal stress (Hampton & Yung, 1996), and a lack of access to or acceptance of IPV services for African Americans (Bent-Goodley, 2004;Joseph, 1997;Williams & Becker, 1994).
