Wolf reintroduction to Scotland: public attitudes and consequences for red deer management

Abstract: Reintroductions are important tools for the conservation of individual species, but recently more attention has been paid to the restoration of ecosystem function, and to the importance of carrying out a full risk assessment prior to any reintroduction programme. In much of the Highlands of Scotland, wolves (Canis lupus) were eradicated by 1769, but there are currently proposals for them to be reintroduced. Their main wild prey if reintroduced would be red deer (Cervus elaphus). Red deer are themselves a conte… Show more

“…In Oman, many people are employed by the captive-born Arabian oryx (Oryx leucoryx) reintroduction program and the program is widely accepted by the local community (Fitter 1984;Price 1986). In Scotland, the public are generally positive about wolf (Canis lupus) reintroductions because the species plays an important role in maintaining ecological functions in the ecosystem (Nilsen et al 2007).…”

“…First, many studies have shown that rural residents tend to have more negative attitudes towards reintroduction programs than urban residents (Ericsson and Heberlein 2003;Morzillo et al 2010;Nilsen et al 2007;Williams et al 2002;Yen et al 2015). Kellert (1994) postulated that being rural tended to predispose one to more negative attitudes toward bears because these individuals are more connected to land-use problems.…”

“…Therefore, an understanding of the drivers of landowner attitudes is vital for guiding conservation action (Thorn et al, 2014), especially for the design of more effective conflict-mitigation techniques. Gaining such an understanding can be achieved by assessing the socio-economic variables which may influence landowner attitudes (Nilsen et al, 2007;Romañach et al, 2007). These variables can include a person's education level (Lagendijk & Gusset, 2008), land use (Romañach et al 2007;Selebatso, Moe & Swenson, 2007), and culture (Selebatso et al, 2007).…”
