In this paper, we propose Self-Adapting Recovery Net (SARN), an extended Petri net model, for specifying exceptional behavior in business processes. SARN adapts the structure of the underlying Petri net at run time to handle exceptions while keeping the Petri net design easy. The proposed framework caters for the specification of high-level recovery policies that are incorporated either with a single task or a set of tasks, called a Recovery Region. These recovery policies are generic directives that model exceptions at design time together with a set of primitive operations used at run time to handle the occurrence of exceptions. We identified a set of recovery policies that are useful and commonly needed in many practical situations. A tool has been developed to illustrate the viability of the proposed exception handling technique.

Abstract. Web services are becoming progressively popular in the building of both inter-and intra-enterprise business processes. These processes are composed from existing Web services based on defined requirements. In collecting together the services for such a composition, developers can employ languages and standards for the Web that facilitate the automation of Web service discovery, execution, composition and interoperation. However, there is no guarantee that a composition of even very good services will always work. Mechanisms are being developed to monitor a composition and to detect and recover from faults automatically. A key factor in such self-healing is to know what faults to look for. If the nature of a fault is known, the system can suggest a suitable recovery mechanism sooner. This paper proposes a novel taxonomy that captures the possible failures that can arise in Web service composition, and classifies the faults that might cause them. The taxonomy covers physical, development and interaction faults that can cause a variety of observable failures in a system's normal operation. An important use of the taxonomy is identifying the faults that can be excluded when a failure occurs. Examples of using the taxonomy are presented.

One challenge in developing wide-area distributed applications is analyzing the system's non-functional properties, including timing constraints and internal dependencies that can affect quality of service. Analysis of non-functional properties requires a precise formal semantics for the language in which the system is written; but labelled transition systems and trace semantics, which are commonly used for this purpose, do not facilitate this kind of analysis. Event structures provide an explicit representation of the the causal dependencies between events in the execution of a system. But event structures are difficult to construct compositionally, because they cannot easily represent fragments of a computation. In this paper we present a partial-order semantics based on heaps (an explicitly encoded form of occurrence nets with read arcs), which naturally represent fragments of behavior. Heaps are then easily translated into asymmetric event structures. The semantics is developed for Orc, an orchestration language in which concurrent services are invoked to achieve a goal while managing time-outs, exceptions, and priority. Orc, and this new semantics, are being used to study quality of service (QoS) for wide area orchestrations.Key-words: partial orders, event structures, semantics
