Wnt Signaling–Related Osteokines at Rest and Following Plyometric Exercise in Prepubertal and Early Pubertal Boys and Girls

Abstract: Plyometric exercise induces an overall anabolic osteokine response favoring osteoblastogenesis over osteoclastogenesis in both boys and girls although the timeline and mechanism(s) may be different.

“…In the preexercise analysis, it turned out that boys have higher levels of RANKL which indicated the discrimination in bone turnover between the two genders through the growth time. Girls showed a reduction in RANKL through exercise and it has kept reducing more when they continued to exercise till 24 h. OPG is enhanced by exercise; this enhancement is higher in boys specifically in 5 min and 1-hour exercise against girls which indicated the increment only on 24 h level of exercise [119]. e other survey has measured the plyometric exercise (high-impact) effects on bones in young females and the outcomes expressed a reduction in RANKL levels after 5minute exercise.…”

“…The five circuit stations included box, lunge, and tuck jumps, single leg hopping, and jumping jacks. The same protocol has been previously used in our laboratory and was successful in eliciting responses in bone biomarkers in pediatric populations (31,32,35,38).…”

“…Acutely, exercise has also been shown to increase bone formation and decrease bone resorption in both children and adults (31)(32)(33)(34). In addition, sclerostin levels have been shown to increase following exercise in adults, while normal weight children show no response (35)(36)(37)(38), suggesting children may be protected from sclerostin increasing post-exercise. Cytokine levels can also be altered both acutely and chronically by exercise, resulting in a net-improved, long term, proinflammatory profile (39)(40)(41).…”

“…The acute exercise bout was meant to examine the bone response to exercise; thus, we utilized a protocol that involves high-impact, weight-bearing loads, as we have done previously in adolescents ( Falk et al, 2016 ; Dekker et al, 2017 ; Klentrou et al, 2018 ; Kurgan et al, 2020 ). Participants began the exercise session with a warm-up that included 5 min of low-intensity cycling (40 W of resistance) on a cycle ergometer.…”
