“…With respect to this report, it could not be excluded that the increases in glial glutamate transporter immunoreactivities may be morphological clues indicating the enhancement of reverse glutamate transport from glia (presumably in astrocytes), like neurons. This is because Na + ‐mediated hyperexcitability during ischaemic condition may be a plausible factor in the reverse transport of various neurotransmitters from glia and neurons (Vizi, 1972,1979; Vizi and Sperlagh, 1999; Kimmich et al., 2001; Miralles et al., 2001; Jimenez et al., 2003). Therefore, our findings suggest that reverse glutamate transport by glia may also play an important role in the elevation of extracellular glutamate concentration in the early ischaemic insults, and down‐regulation of glial glutamate transporter immunoreactivities may participate in excessive glutamate concentration during the late ischaemic insults.…”
