VoIP calls are sensitive to several impairments, such as delay and packet loss. One way to overcome these problems is by adaptively adjusting application-layer parameters to keep a minimum speech quality level. At the heart of self-adaptive systems lies a feedback loop, which consists of four key activities: monitoring, analysis, planning, and execution. Nevertheless, the existing adaptive approaches to QoS control of VoIP do not explicitly exhibit this feedback loop. Bringing it to surface can help developers in designing more robust and human-independent VoIP systems. This survey presents a comprehensive review of the current state-of-the-art research on speech quality adaptation of VoIP systems at the application layer and some research challenges on this subject.

IEEE 802.11 is the most popular standard for WLAN networks. It offers different physical transmission rates. This paper focuses on this multi transmission rate of 802.11 WLANs and its effect on speech quality. In non-adaptive systems, when the physical layer switches from a higher transmission rate to a lower one, different than the one that the VoIP flow needs, the switching may result in congestion, high delay and packet loss, and consequently speech quality degradation. However, there are some algorithms that adapt the transmission parameters according to the channel conditions. In this study we demonstrate how choosing parameter (different codec and packet size) can affect the voice quality, network delay and packet loss. Further, this study presents a comparison between adaptive and non-adaptive methods. The adaptive method has also been evaluated for different congestion level from perceived speech quality point of view.

In this paper, we propose a scalable speech/audio coder control algorithm to improve Quality of Service (QoS) of Voice over IP (VoIP) calls over Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs). There is an upper bound on the number of simultaneous VoIP calls that can be connected in a basic service set (BSS) of 802.11 WLANs which can be composed of an access point (AP) and wireless stations (WSTAs). In the case that there is an upper bound on the number of the calls, even making an additional VoIP call in the BSS which has been already saturated with other calls can severely degrade the quality of all VoIP calls. However, if we can control bit-rates of a speech/audio coder which has variable bit rates to reduce the size of voice packets, as a result, if wireless channel occupancy time which is occupied by an AP and associated wireless LAN stations is reduced, then the additional VoIP call can be gracefully accepted into the BSS with a little degradation of voice quality due to the reduced bit rates.In the same context, we propose a speech/audio coder control algorithm to improve QoS of voice traffic in the case of the additional VoIP call, especially from the point of end-to-end delay.
