Ao longo dos últimos trinta anos, o desmatamento da Amazônia alarmou o mundo, e embora muitas das causas do desmatamento são bem conhecidas, outros são mais novas. Ao combinar os relatos de conflito a partir de notícias na imprensa, sensoriamento remoto e sistemas de informações geográficas, descubro que a interação social conflituosa nas disputas fundiárias envolve as florestas da Amazônia Oriental, e as envolve como local e objeto de conflito. Os resultados de estudos de caso e de uma análise de desmatamento regional fornecem algumas implicações para o investimento estrangeiro para retardar o desmatamento e também para o programa de vigilância de desmatamento que o Brasil implementou na última década.
