Withings Body Cardio Versus Gold Standards of Pulse-Wave Velocity and Body Composition

Abstract: Home blood pressure monitors are widely used by consumers yet cardiovascular health may be better defined by pulse-wave velocity (PWV). So far, the Withings Body Cardio scale is the only consumer device that has been designed to measure PWV and body composition, including fat mass (FM) and fat-free mass (FFM), in the home setting. While one study has demonstrated that this device meets the acceptable accuracy standards of the ARTERY Society, no study has accounted for the gravitational effect of standing on a … Show more

“…These two devices were selected from the wide range of existing products. The smart body scale Withings ® Body Cardio [ 49 , 50 ] was chosen to measure body composition data because of its flat design, large standing base, and large illuminated display. The Withings ® Activité Pop [ 51 ] smart watch was selected to measure activity because of its similarity to a conventional wristwatch in terms of handling and shape.…”

“…SphygmoCor devices are the only noninvasive devices cleared by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that assess central aortic pressure waveform (5). They are considered as a gold standard of reference for PWV measurements and have been validated against the ARTERY Society's PWV guidelines (5,6,10). Three electrodes were attached to the top and bottom of the participant's sternum and rib cage to monitor electrical activity of the heart.…”

“…Both IG and CG participants were given the Withings Go activity tracker (Withings) [ 41 ], Withings Body smart weighing scale [ 42 ], and Withings Health Mate app [ 43 ] to record, store, and transmit daily weight and physical activity data, but the CG did not receive the SCDG app. The Withings Body smart weighing scales have been found to accurately measure body mass [ 44 ]. We selected the Withings Go tracker because it has long battery life, is waterproof, is reasonably accurate in measuring activity levels of people with HF [ 45 , 46 ], and uses a clock schema, which is a familiar interface for most adults, to represent the user’s daily physical activity.…”
