This article deals with transnational transfer of ideas about witchcraft at the end of the sixteenth century. The outset is alleged witchcraft performed against a royal Danish fleet that was to carry Princess Anne across the North Sea to her husband, King James VI of Scotland, autumn 1589, and following trials in Copenhagen. These include court records from witchcraft trials and diplomatic correspondence between Denmark, England and Scotland. By close-readings of these texts, a multi-layered narrative emerges. The article sheds light on the routes for transmission of witchcraft ideas, as well as the contemporary context for interpreting witchcraft notions.

The paper is a resume of the state of the art about the topic of cold water ordeals applied to the witchcraft court cases in an early modern Europe . Author presents case studies to explain the ordeal in different parts of Europe . Regional differences and similarities are highlighted . Nevertheless, a main conclusion is that belief in "justice" of this ordeal was common and accepted among European society, despite a confession . This universal and widespread belief resulted in trusting the ordeal despite it was forbidden since medieval times . A result of a cold water ordeal indicated a witch or denied witchcraft accusations . Not every judge accepted the ordeal, however the sceptics were an insignificant minority . A cold water ordeal could be applied during a whole process, at different phases of a trial; it depended on local tradition in this respect .

Magi och medborgarskap diskuteras vanligtvis i skilda sammanhang. I finländsk och svensk litteratur från mitten av 1800-talet ställs emellertid häxor och medborgare i direkt relation till varandra. Bonden har ofta lyfts fram som företrädare för folket, men denna artikel visar att även häxan fick representera nationen på olika sätt i litteraturen vid mitten av 1800-talet. I århundraden hade stat och kyrka brännmärkt trolldom som en pakt med Satan, som onda makters sätt att verka i världen. Under 1800-talet förändrades förståelsen av ondskans problem-liksom förståelsen av folket. "Folket" gavs olika innebörder i olika politiska läger. I såväl liberala nationalistiska demokratiseringsrörelser som i konservativ "officiell nationalism" var dock begreppen "folk" och "medborgare" centrala. 2 Det moderna medborgarskapsbegreppet var vid mitten av 1800-talet fortfarande under konstruktion. 3 Det uppfattades i hög grad som en
