Abstract: The Russian Federation mandates a Russia-specific reserves reporting and classification system for all operating companies in the country. One of the key classifications thresholds within this system is from C2 to C1. According to the existing definitions moving reserves to C1 category requires 'industrial production' and this has traditionally meant an openhole DST. The Volga Urals basin of Western Russia has a very long production history and consequently many of the original target reservoirs have become depleted. The Uzenskoe field is no exception. Originally placed on production in 2008 the original target layers in the lower Cretaceous formations have since depleted. It was assumed that potentially productive reservoirs exist in the overlying layers; however, these had never been evaluated. Using a variety of through-casing measurements these layers were investigated for productive potential. Integrated interpretation of the acquired data was used evaluate lithology, rock composition, saturation and porosity to identify potentially productive layers. These layers were then perforated and tested with a wireline conveyed formation tester inside casing. Fluid type was verified, samples were acquired and pressure transient analysis was performed to determine layers permeability. The entire evaluation took less than three days of rig time comparing very favorably with alternative methods. In this paper we discuss the planning, execution and interpretation of this evaluation exercise.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of using modern Wireline Formation Tester (WFT) tools to refine the geological information and classify hydrocarbon reserves using an example from the Yamal Peninsula. In order to meet the GKZ reserve classification requirements it is necessary to have production from the reservoir which was traditionally done with the help of open hole DST tools. It has recently been allowed to perform this task with WFT tools. In this paper we will consider a through casing application in a multi-layer reservoir. The combined use of WFT and DST allows us to contrast and compare both technologies. As a result of this work we will show that the WFT can deliver similar quality information as the DST allowing us to acquire a C1 classification, determine fluid contacts and confirm saturations. The WFT offers the additional flexibility of testing ‘missed’ layers. There are also important differences to be noted, most significantly the higher resolution of the WFT allows pinpoint determination of contacts, however the relatively low flow rates and volumes usually does not allow us to determine reservoir boundaries. The combination of WFT and DST technologies offers the best picture of the reservoir.

Building accurate reservoir models can be quite challenging, especially highly stratified thick intervals in hydraulic communication in reservoir. Presented methodology is based on comprehensive Interval and Interference Pressure Transient Testing (IIPTT) for classified reservoir types with a systematic approach. Classification of reservoir types is based on layering, thickness, and hydraulic communication of layers in the reservoir. The methodology describes building more accurate anisotropic reservoir models, providing well performance assessment based on integrated comprehensive IIPTT solving with efficient non-linear parameter estimation and modeling with numerical simulation for different reservoir types. The number distributed IIPTTs are optimized to ensure to achieve coverage across total thickness depending on the reservoir type. It is demonstrated that high resolution accurate reservoir models can be built for relatively thick highly layered reservoirs in a feasible manner. In addition, field examples with classified reservoir types including flow tests supported the methodology.
