Smart Grids and Their Role in Transforming Human Activities—A Systematic Literature Review

In this work, a systematic review of the literature has been carried out to analyse the design of intelligent networks in environments inhabited by people and the applications of sensors to improve quality of life and aid human activities. This study aims to answer three research questions. The first question is whether the design of smart grids is made with people in mind. The second question focuses on whether intelligent networks are being taken account of in the research on human activity recognition, the Internet of Things, and the recognition of activities of daily living. The third question looks at whether there are synergies and multidisciplinary teams studying state-of-the-art technologies applied to environments inhabited by elderly or disabled people. Installations with sensors deployed for the improvement of the quality of human life will also help to improve the quality of the intelligent network, thus integrating the Human–Technology binomial. This study concludes with an analysis of the results of the sources examined, putting forward a protocol of seven proposals to guide future work.

El objetivo de este trabajo fue desarrollar una red de monitorización de temperatura, humedad y calidad del aire en un centro de datos para la automatización del encendido y apagado del sistema de enfriamiento, ventilación y filtrado de aire usando Internet de las cosas (IoT-Internet of Things). Se puso en marcha una red con tecnología inalámbrica de largo alcance compuesta por cinco nodos esclavo, un nodo maestro y una interfaz de usuario. Los nodos esclavo transmiten periódicamente al nodo maestro el valor de las tres variables de ambiente. El nodo maestro envía la información recibida de los esclavos a un servidor en la nube para poder ser accedida desde una interfaz de usuario. Cuando el valor de alguna de las variables alcanza el umbral configurado se enciende el sistema de enfriamiento, ventilación y/o filtrado de aire, según sea el caso. Las pruebas mostraron que se logró una precisión menor a ±1.0 °C en la medida de temperatura, menor a ±2 % en la medida de humedad, menor a ±8 μg/m³ en la medida de la calidad del aire y un alcance de 11.5 kilómetros con línea de vista en la transmisión de datos en la red. Según estos resultados, la red puede ponerse en funcionamiento para la monitorización de sensores y procesos en otras instalaciones con este alcance.

Noncoherent Decision Fusion over Fading Hybrid MACs in Wireless Sensor Networks

In this paper, we consider the problem of decision fusion for noncoherent detection in a wireless sensor network. Novel to the current work is the integration of the hybrid multi-access channel (MAC) in the fusion rule design. We assume that sensors transmit their local binary decisions over a hybrid MAC which is a composite of conventional orthogonal and nonorthogonal MACs. Under Rayleigh fading scenario, we present a likelihood ratio (LR)-based fusion rule, which has been shown to be optimal through theoretical analysis and simulation. However, it requires a large amount of computation, which is not easily implemented in resource-constrained sensor networks. Therefore, three sub-optimal alternatives with low-complexity are proposed, namely the weighed energy detector (WED), the deflection-coefficient-maximization (DCM), and the two-step (TS) rules. We show that when the channel signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is low, the LR-based fusion rule reduces to the WED rule; at high-channel SNR, it is equivalent to the TS rule; and at moderate-channel SNR, it can be approached closely by the DCM rule. Compared with the conventional orthogonal and nonorthogonal MACs, numerical results show that the hybrid MAC with the proposed fusion rules can improve the detection performance when the channel SNR is medium.
