Wireless Sensor Networks: a Survey on Environmental Monitoring

Abstract: Abstract-Traditionally, environmental monitoring is achieved by a small number of expensive and high precision sensing unities. Collected data are retrieved directly from the equipment at the end of the experiment and after the unit is recovered. The implementation of a wireless sensor network provides an alternative solution by deploying a larger number of disposable sensor nodes. Nodes are equipped with sensors with less precision, however, the network as a whole provides better spatial resolution of the are… Show more

“…In particular, FRs must have knowledge of the assets available in order to tailor an effective emergency response strategy [1]- [3]. The main contribution of this paper is to address the task of asset registry when the resources of independently-deployed sensor networks need to be harnessed to help FRs.…”

“…The reader could also refer to the survey [23] and the references therein. Sensor networks as the pillars of the contextual information sources promise to revolutionize sensing in a wide range of intelligent application domains because of their reliability, accuracy, flexibility, cost effectiveness [24] and ease of deployment.…”
