Wireless sensing using oscillator circuits locked to remote high-Q SAW resonators

Abstract: This paper introduces a method of wireless read out of high Q surface acoustic wave (SAW) resonator sensors. The resonator is excited by a short RF pulse and decays after switching off the interrogating signal. In the measurement system, a gated phase locked loop (GPLL) locks to the resonance frequency of the SAW resonator within a few bursts. Then the frequency of the GPLL oscillator is synchronized to the resonance of the sensor and can be measured easily. The concept is intended to yield an alternative to i… Show more

“…After the interrogator switching off the charge power, the signals at and close to the resonance frequency f 0 are delivered from the SAW resonator to the connected antenna and decay with a time constant, the rest fades away. 10 The duration of the response is transient and only lasts for a very short time, which is related with the quality factor (Q) of the SAW resonator. Thus, the RF SAW response y(t) off is expressed as: 4 …”

“…It is interrogated using the burst mode technique and the temperature dependent resonance frequency is measured with a gated FFT in the unforced time frame, shown in Figure 3a as the red area. The excitation frequency is adjusted over the temperature ramp by setting it to the previously obtained resonance frequency completing the feedback chain of the presented digital-gated phased-locked loop [5]. The TSXO shows a quadratic temperature response with a sensitivity of −1.94 Hz/°C at 25 °C.…”
