Wireless Magnetoelastic Resonance Sensors: A Critical Review

Abstract: This paper presents a comprehensive review of magnetoelastic environmental sensor technology; topics include operating physics, sensor design, and illustrative applications. Magnetoelastic sensors are made of amorphous metallic glass ribbons or wires, with a characteristic resonant frequency inversely proportional to length. The remotely detected resonant frequency of a magnetoelastic sensor shifts in response to different physical parameters including stress, pressure, temperature, flow velocity, liquid visco… Show more

“…[1][2][3][4][5] Similarly, freestanding beams made of ferromagnetic material as a sensor platform have been widely studied for detection of physical, chemical, and biochemical substances. [6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13] These beams operate in the longitudinal mode offering a higher resonant frequencies compared to the transverse mode. Figs.…”

“…Resonators consist of a magnetostrictive material, one or two exciting coils, one or two pick-up coils and eventually a support (a schematic view is given in Figure 5) [9,10]. Exciting coil, either Helmholtz type or a rather long cylindrical coil, aims to produce a homogeneous magnetic field with an alternating component and a DC component.…”

“…As described by Grimes [10], vibrations "can be detected magnetically with a pick-up coil, acoustically with a microphone, or optically with a laser emitter and a photo-transistor." Next, we focus on resonators with vibration detection based on the Villari effect, resulting from the pick-up coil as previously mentioned.…”

“…That is the working principle of a magnetoelastic sensor. [16][17][18][19] This kind of sensors allow a high degree of specificity, by functionalizing the sensing material to make it react with an specific agent of the media, as can be certain gases (e.g., humidity 20 or co 2 sensors, 21 ), chemical or biological agents (pH, 22 blood coagulation, 23,24 lipoproteins, 25 ) and stress, 26 or viscosity sensors. 27 Their versatility and the fact of being interrogated without physical contacts, make those sensors very suitable and useful for several applications in different fields.…”
