Winter pasture and cover crops and their effects on soil and summer grain crops

Abstract: -The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of winter land use on the amount of residual straw, the physical soil properties and grain yields of maize, common bean and soybean summer crops cultivated in succession. The experiment was carried out in the North Plateau of Santa Catarina state, Brazil, from May 2006 to April 2010. Five strategies of land use in winter were evaluated: intercropping with black oat + ryegrass + vetch, without grazing and nitrogen (N) fertilization (intercropping cover); th… Show more

“…These results indicate that the yield of these crops in succession to forage is not affected when moderate grazing pressure is used, which is in agreement with the results obtained by Lunardi et al (2008), Balbinot Junior et al (2011 and Moraes et al (2011). Additionally, the present study's results demonstrate that the time between when the grazing is stopped and the sowing of summer crops occurs does not have much relevance when the forage is maintained at an appropriately high level during the grazing period, as discussed by Balbinot Junior et al (2009).…”

“…Higher biomass accumulation was observed in the 2 nd period, which could be attributed to biomass accumulation by plants deposited on the soil surface, and was similar to that observed in other studies with various soil uses in the winter (Lopes et al, 2009;Balbinot Junior et al, 2011).…”

“…In order to rectify the shortage of high quality forage (Aguinaga et al, 2008), hibernal forages like white oat can be grown under an integrated crop-livestock system in areas of direct seeding kept in fallow during the winter period (Balbinot Junior et al, 2011). Such system not only helps to provide vegetal cover (Cassol et al, 2011) but also contributes to the sustainability over time.…”

“…Resultados semelhantes foram obtidos por BALBINOT JÚNIOR et al (2011b), que observaram efeito residual do N aplicado na pastagem associado com o efeito da ciclagem de nutrientes sobre a cultura do milho. À medida que aumentam as doses de N aplicada no inverno ocorre aumento da produtividade de grãos na área pastejada, sendo superiores às áreas sem pastejo.…”
