Winter-hardy Mammoth™ Series Garden Chrysanthemums ‘Red Daisy’, ‘White Daisy’, and ‘Coral Daisy’ Sporting a Shrub Plant Habit

Abstract: Three new Chrysanthemum ·hybrida, garden chrysanthemum cultivars: Red Daisy, White Daisy, and Coral Daisy, are the first in the Mammoth TM series that are advanced interspecific hybrids derived from an open-pollinated cross between hexaploid C. weyrichii (Maxim.) Tzvelv. · C. ·grandiflora Tzvelv. These cultivars are backcross or inbred derivatives of the original interspecific F 1 hybrids. All three cultivars are U.S. Department of Agriculture Z3b (-34.4 8C to -37.2 8C) winter-hardy herbaceous perennials exhib… Show more

“…1) is the result of a series of outcrosses of hybrid descendants of the original cross in 1989 between two allohexaploid (2n = 6x = 54) species, C. weyrichii (Maxi.) “…Use MN 98-89-7 is a winter-hardy herbaceous perennial that attracts honey bees and butterflies during the flowering period, similar to all Mammothä cultivars (Anderson et al, 2008). It is a low-maintenance plant that does not require pinching the terminal meristem before July 4 to induce lateral branching (Langevin, 1992;Widmer, 1980).…”

Most derived, interspecific progeny from the cross C. weyrichii 'Pink Bomb' · [C. ·grandiflorum 'Adorn' (PP 6059) or 'Crusador' (PP 6531)] were either nonflowering (rosetted) or have large, shrub-like plant habits characteristic of the 'Mammothä' series (Anderson et al, 2008). 749) is the first groundcover type of winter-hardy garden chrysanthemum.…”
