Winning the Battles, Losing the War? Rethinking Methodology for Forensic Computing Research

Abstract: In the last 10 years, Forensic computing (FC) has emerged in response to the challenges of illegal, criminal and other inappropriate on-line behaviours. As awareness of the need for the accurate and legally admissible collection, collation, analysis and presentation of digital data has grown, so has recognition of the challenges this requirement poses for technical, legal and organisational responses to these on-line behaviours. Despite recognition of the multi-dimensional nature of these behaviours and the ch… Show more

“…Technical skills are pivotal to any DF practitioner and their organization, and this work seeks to first stress this point. Without knowledge of the technology types in existence, and the tools and techniques needed to investigate them, very little progress can be made in this domain and the field quickly becomes unfit for its purpose of supporting law enforcement and criminal justice systems to understand and police crime (Broucek & Turner, 2006). It is, therefore, understandable why technical skills are prioritized during training.…”

“…The development of technologies that impede forensic analysis and evidence recovery (antiforensics) has become an issue for forensic computing investigators [2]. Conventional forensic computing methodologies may not be adequate for the recovery of data that is resident in a location other than the target system.…”

“…Broucek and Turner [13] have argued that the current approaches to digital forensics (or forensic computing) are severely limited due to the lack of coherent frameworks and approaches for digital forensics and that new procedures to understand and model competing requirements are needed. In this paper, we develop a method for experimental testing in digital forensic reconstructions.…”
