Amongst the eight papers nominated for 2022, topics in urban industrial ecology and large-scale metal flows were prevalent. Liu et al. (2022) provided a framework for coupling Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and stock-driven material flow analysis (MFA); while Peña et al. (2022) showed how GIS data can be used to improve the application of metabolic studies in urban planning. A highly ambitious method by Stephan et al.(2022) was used in modeling the life cycle environmental performance of built stocks. A fourth urban contribution from Xie et al. ( 2022) created a bottom-up model to estimate fine-grained entity-level direct and embodied land-use footprints. There were two papers on metal flows: a study of the dynamics of China's chromium stocks and flows from 2000 to 2019 (Gao et al., 2022); and a detailed analysis of the international tungsten supply chain, tracing 40 commodities over 223 countries (Tang et al., 2022). On other topics, Lopez et al. (2022) showed how the dynamics of productcomponent systems impact product end-of-life through an application to electric vehicles and their batteries. Lavoie et al. ( 2022) developed an approach to quantifying the physical impacts of micro-and nano-sized plastics in life cycle impact assessment.The committee awarded the 2022 Junior Best Paper Prize to the following two articles:• Jérôme Lavoie, Anne-Marie Boulay, and Cécile Bulle for their publication on "Aquatic micro-and nano-plastics in life cycle assessment: Development of an effect factor for the quantification of their physical impact on biota."
