Direct drive permanent magnet synchronous generators have numerous advantages such as improved reliability, low maintenance, long life, and developed performance characteristics. In recent years, many researchers have worked on this generator to enhance the performance of the generator, especially for the wind turbine application. The focus of this paper is on the development of a step-by-step method for the design of a permanent magnet synchronous generator. Then the winding function method is used to model the generator and calculate its output characteristics analytically. The analytical results of the designed generator are validated using the finite element analysis (FEA) and it is demonstrated that the obtained results from both methods are in great agreement with the experimental measurements of the Northern Power direct-drive generator. The sensitivity analysis and optimization procedure based on the genetic algorithm are used to design an optimum generator. The optimization goal is obtaining higher efficiency and power factor with lower voltage regulation and required permanent magnet volume compared to the initial design. In addition, the calculation of the voltage total harmonic distortion (THD) is presented and the optimum skew angle for the optimum generator is computed to reduce the voltage THD.

Technical and Economic Evaluation of Efficiency Improvement after Rewinding in Low-Power Induction Motors: A Brazilian Case

Nowadays the economic analysis of an induction motor's life cycle is the clearest way to measure the viability of actions to promote energy-efficient technologies to the end user. The cost effectiveness in motors replacement by energy-efficient motors is a well-known practice that leads to energy savings, however this paper presents the cost-effectiveness of low-power induction motors which have their efficiency improved after rewinding. This process improves the investment viability and brings the greatest financial and energetic savings. In this paper, low-power induction motors are rewound and their efficiencies are measured by tests A and B from IEEE standard 112/2017. The rewound motors have better cost-effectiveness than replacement by IE3/Premium and even IE4/Super-Premium units. The rewound motors increase between 3 and 4 percentage points in relation to former efficiency and the payback is less than 2 years, regardless of the efficiency measurement method.

The paper presents a two phase variable speed induction motor drive for wide speed application. The drive is designed to meet drive cycle requirements of Worldwide harmonized Light vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP). The required torque speed specifications of the induction machine are obtained from the drive cycle. The wide speed range operation of the drive obtained by pole changing technique. The proposed induction motor drive system consists of an online pole changing two phase induction motor which is driven using a four leg voltage source converter. Using the voltage source converter currents are controlled in certain coil groups of the machine to enable operation as two pole and four pole motor. The paper describes the windings configuration and operation of the two phase induction machine drive.
