Wind Resource and Wind Power Generation Assessment for Education in Engineering

Abstract: This paper proposes a practical approach to assess wind energy resource and calculate annual energy production for use on university courses in engineering. To this end, two practical exercises were designed in the open-source software GNU Octave (compatible with MATLAB) using both synthetic and field data. The script used to generate the synthetic data as well as those created to develop the practical exercises are included for the benefit of other educational bodies. With the first exercise the students lear… Show more

“…The experience acquired to date has allowed contractor companies to learn for the construction and assembly of wind farms. In addition, the training of specialized personnel in the operation of wind farms has been carried out, as well as experience has been acquired in the processes of processing environmental licenses for operating such plants and building trust relations with neighboring communities [42].…”

“…Generally, the statistical distributions are implemented to analyze real-life situations that are uncertain and endangered. For example, the probability distributions are frequently applied to analyze data in (i) engineering and related sectors [1], (ii) healthcare engineering [2], (iii) the economic and financial sector [3], (iv) hydrology [4], (v) education [5], (vi) metrology [6], (vii) biological sector [7], and (viii) sports [8].…”

“…In general, wind energy programs are better developed in Europe, where consortiums of universities offer graduate degrees and perform collaborative research. More specifically, coursework has been motivated by local changes in energy portfolios, for example in Spain, which saw the most growth in installed wind farms in 2019 [10].…”
