Wind Pattern Change Along a Period of Coastal Occurrence Variation of a Stinging Medusa on a SW Atlantic Beach

Abstract: Monte Hermoso (SW Atlantic, Argentina) is a coastal ecosystem highly modulated by wind forcing. Offshore winds have historically played a leading role in the tourist influx as they are associated with the occurrence of the endemic stinging medusa Olindias sambaquiensis. This species is closely related to warm summers but it could be favored by low temperatures in previous winters. Since summer 2013, a change in the wind pattern was locally perceived coincidently with the absence of the medusa in coastal waters… Show more

“…However, in the last 5 years the number of calm days has increased significantly, which reduced the number of storm surge phenomena on the town of Ingeniero White from once a year to once every 2 or 2.5 years. That also changed the conditions in beaches just outside the estuary where there is a reduction of the appearance of jelly fishes (always associated to upwelling forced by N winds) during the summer months (Brendel et al, 2017).…”

“…Local winds over the South Atlantic are modulated by the intensity and displacement of the South Atlantic subtropical anticyclone (Venegas et al 1996, Palma et al 2004. In the last decades, this anticyclone revealed a slight southward movement (Dragani et al 2010) and caused wind pattern modifications over the region (Simionato et al 2005, Brendel et al 2017. At the interannual time scale, the southward displacement of the anticyclone tends to be associated with positive phases of SAM (Sun et al 2017).…”
