“…The Cross-Chain Long Range Navigation (LORAN) is a modern, research-quality system, which provides high-resolution winds; tracking errors are not dependent on the elevation angle of the sonde from the receiver (Rust et al, 1990). The system uses sondes (Väisäla RSL-80) that receive LORAN navigation signals for locating the balloon and calculating horizontal winds (for details see Passi and Morel, 1987). The radiosondes relay LORAN transmissions from which wind speed and direction can be retrieved by processing the times of arrival of signals from five to six LORAN stations around the Great Lakes region.…”
