Wind energy assessment for NEOM city, Saudi Arabia

Abstract: This paper provides an analytical assessment of the feasibility of wind energy for Saudi Arabia's envisioned NEOM city, which plans to use only renewable energy. A probability density function was fit to winds simulated for the NEOM region during 2014‐2018. Using this distribution, the optimal wind turbine was selected as the one with the largest capacity factor and smallest levelized cost of energy (LCOE). Financial, environmental, and risk analysis of a wind farm consisting of 100 of these units was also per… Show more

“…The probabilistic nature of wind speed could be modeled with Weibull PDF, as shown in () 53,59,60 ftnormalvv=ktct·)(ktctkt1·exp)(vtctkt1forct>1andkt>0where v is the wind speed of the t ‐th time interval, and the parameters of Weibull PDF ( c , k ) could be calculated by () and (28) 47,61 .…”

“…[9]. Furthermore, Saudi Arabia has tremendous wind and sun, and these technologies are considered among the best in the world [69][70][71][72][73][74][75]. Nevertheless, Saudi WD-PP and SL-PP prices will be at the low end of the global price range.…”

“…Several works have promoted the high wind potential of this region, which is characterized by high speed and slightly variable winds over the whole year. A thorough case study has been conducted in [15], where a WF made of a hundred identical WTs (each one with rated power of 3.2 MW) has been proved to be profitable even without any government subsidy. WTBSs would be thus an effective solution for limiting the visual impact on NEOM's landscape, especially given its goal of preserving 95% of its natural resources (note also that off-shore WTs have a positive impact on sea life).…”
