WiMorse: A Contactless Morse Code Text Input System Using Ambient WiFi Signals

Abstract: Recent years have witnessed advances of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies and their applications to enable contactless sensing and human-computer interaction in smart homes. For people with Motor Neurone Disease (MND), their motion capabilities are severely impaired and they have difficulties interacting with IoT devices and even communicating with other people. As the disease progresses, most patients lose their speech function eventually which makes the widely adopted voicebased solutions fail. In contra… Show more

“…Since the antennas in the same LTE adapter share the same clock, they have the same CFO, SFO and so on. Thus, we introduce the CSI ratio [15,33] between two antennas as a new base signal for LTE-based sensing to suppress the impulse noise in amplitude and eliminate these phase random offsets in CSI of LTE signals. The CSI ratio is defined as follows:…”

“…More importantly, we can observe that CSI ratio circles around approximately 7 times in the complex plane as the bucket moves 50cm in Figure 4c. It has been proved in [15,33] that the CSI ratio induced by a single moving (reflective) target have following properties:…”

“…Despite its popularity, existing Wi-Fi-based sensing technologies are constrained by a practical challenge which we refer to as the position-dependency challenge: many existing solutions use machine learning or deep learningbased techniques to learn and extract features from the CSI signals that can be used to recognize human actions and activities. Unfortunately, these features capture information related to not only the action itself but also the location and orientation of the action [12,32,39]. Therefore, existing solutions can not recognize actions in a location/orientation-independent manner.…”

“…Wi-Sign [ 26 ] uses three WiFi transceivers to associate gesture movements with CSI signal waveform changes and realizes the recognition of eight commonly used sign language gestures. WiMorse [ 27 ] uses CSI to sense subtle finger movements and achieves 95% recognition accuracy for Morse codes generated by fingers.…”
