Willingness to Pay in Dermatology: Assessment of the Burden of Skin Diseases

Abstract: Willingness to pay (WTP) is a monetary, preference-based, burden-of-disease measure with a potential role in dermatology, where many conditions are temporary and/or mild, and many treatments are inexpensive and one might be able to imagine paying out of pocket. We assessed construct validity by interviewing 254 consecutive dermatology patients at Stanford Medical Center, Grady Hospital, and Parkland Hospital. Instruments asked about an individual's own health status and elicited WTP, time-trade-off (TTO) utili… Show more

“…Health impact assessments are usually driven by mortality risks because, at least with approaches based on “willingness to pay”, deaths by far outweigh any other costs of disease [49]. Since the reasons for the reduced risk of melanoma deaths at higher altitudes are unknown, unambiguous conclusions could not be drawn.…”

“…Traditionally, methods such as the time trade-off (TTO), standard gamble or willingness to pay (WTP) are used to generate a utility weighting. 31 Utility weightings are assigned to different health states ranging from 1, representing perfect health, to 0, representing death. 12 The standard gamble usually involves giving patients a choice to assume a risk of immediate death for immediate cure, employing an algorithm based on the preferences reported to determine a utility weighting.…”

“…For participants with depression, treatment duration and individual cost were highly important . In addition, patients with longer disease duration set significant higher importance to the duration of benefit and those receiving injectables valued the probability of benefit, treatment location, delivery method, treatment frequency and duration more …”
