Abstract:Objective: Research shows that women experiencing domestic violence and mental health problems often fall into gaps in services between support for domestic violence and support for mental health. This article reports on an action research project adopting a strengths-based approach to recovery funded by the European Commission. Multi-method research was carried out in five European countries examining how interconnections of domestic violence and mental health impact the lives of women, how their lives can be improved by empowering strategies, and how service providers' professional learning can be developed. Women survivors' strengths and post-traumatic growth in the context of domestic violence remains a considerably under-researched area and the study provides new insights into adopting a strengthsbased framework. Method: Free training programs were designed, delivered and evaluated for two groups of participants (n=136) pertaining to women service users, and mental health service providers (men and women) working with abused women. Results: Program evaluation data gained through surveys and focus groups show that women participants reported growth in self-esteem and coping skills, while professionals felt better equipped to address the tandem issues of domestic violence and mental health. Conclusions: Findings extend current knowledge about the barriers and facilitators to empowerment and strengths-based recovery perspectives, professional learning, and offer a more nuanced understanding of women's agential ability for post-traumatic growth. This also needs to be explicit in the heading of Table 2. You need to explain in your limitations section why the measure wasn't used again following the training to assess change. The lack of any quantitative measure of change consequent to the training is a weakness of the study. A large body of evidence from experimental studies has documented that n‐3 fatty acids can modify a variety of cell functions and disease states. As lymphocytes and macrophages are important cells for the development of the inflammatory and non‐inflammatory immune response and are known to utilize high rates of glucose and glutamine, we have evaluated the effect of n‐3 PUFA rich diet on the metabolisation of glucose and glutamine these cells, as well as the effect of one such diet upon the proliferative response of lymphocytes and the phagocytic capacity and hydrogen peroxide production by macrophages. The diet provoked an increase in the flux of glucose through the Krebs cycle in macrophages as well as a reduction in G6PDh and glutaminase activity in these cells. Lymphocytes from n‐3 PUFA rich diet‐fed rats showed a reduction in glucose and glutamine decarboxylation. Taken together the data show that, at least in part, the functional changes observed in macrophages and lymphocytes from n‐3 PUFA‐rich diet fed rats are related to the effect of this diet upon glucose and glutamine metabolism, leading to immunosupression

Multiple grass mixes as opposed to single grasses for allergen immunotherapy in allergic rhinitis

Grass pollen allergy affects approximately 40% of allergic patients. Subcutaneous allergen immunotherapy (SCIT) is the only allergen-specific and disease-modifying treatment available. Currently available therapeutic vaccines for the treatment of grass pollen allergy are based on natural grass pollen extracts which are either made from pollen of one cross-reactive grass species or from several related grass species. Clinical studies have shown that SCIT performed with timothy grass pollen extract is effective for the treatment of grass pollen allergy. Moreover, it has been demonstrated that recombinant timothy grass pollen allergens contain the majority of relevant epitopes and can be used for SCIT in clinical trials. However, recent in vitro studies have suggested that mixes consisting of allergen extracts from several related grass species may have advantages for SCIT over single allergen extracts. Here, we review current knowledge regarding the disease-relevant allergens in grass pollen allergy, available clinical studies comparing SCIT with allergen extracts from timothy grass or from mixes of several related grass species of the Pooideae subfamily, in vitro cross-reactivity studies performed with natural allergen extracts and recombinant allergens and SCIT studies performed with recombinant timothy grass pollen allergens. In vitro and clinical studies performed with natural allergen extracts reveal no relevant advantages of using multiple grass mixes as opposed to single grass pollen extracts. Several studies analysing the molecular composition of natural allergen extracts and the molecular profile of patients' immune responses after SCIT with allergen extracts indicate that the major limitation for the production of a high quality grass pollen vaccine resides in intrinsic features of natural allergen extracts which can only be overcome with recombinant allergen-based technologies.
