Will personalized e-Learning increase deep learning in higher education?

Abstract: Purpose Recent research in higher education has pointed out that personalized e-learning through the use of learning management systems, such as Moodle, improves the academic results of students and facilitates the detection of at-risk students. Design/methodology/approach A sample of 124 students following the Degree in Health Sciences at the University of Burgos participated in this study. The objectives were as follows: to verify whether the use of a Moodle-based personalized e-learning system will predic… Show more

“…Nevertheless, both groups perceived the teaching resources used during the health crisis as adequate, although the percentage satisfaction was always higher in the group in which IPAs were implemented. These results support those found in other research on: the use of advanced learning technologies in the LMS as a good resource for learning regulation [13]; the use of advanced technologies in LMS learning with personalized attention [2,12,14]; the use of PBL in LMS environments for increasing collaborative work [6,7]; and the use of LMS with additional technologies, which, together with a pedagogical model similar to the one applied in this study [15], increased the motivation and the effectiveness of learning among students [3]. In addition, specifically in the group with access to an IPA, greater satisfaction was found with the teaching-learning process [22], with teacher guidance in the teaching-learning process [23,24], and greater general satisfaction [44].…”

“…Advanced learning technologies are frequently applied within a Learning Management System (LMS). An LMS has many advantages, among which we can highlight personalized attention to the student [2], which makes it possible to increase motivation [3]. Likewise, an LMS can facilitate individual and group work [4], and the use of different resources such as virtual laboratories, computer graphics, flipped learning, and flipped classroom experiences, virtual workshops, and messaging, among others [5].…”

“…Likewise, it was confirmed that the teaching style appears to condition student behavior on the LMS, which supports what has been found in other investigations [1,2,[8][9][10][11][12]. This aspect sheds light on the frequency of use of resources and activities, suggesting that it depends on the instructional design that the teacher implements.…”

“…It is necessary to study the type of learning object that is applied and its usability for a student or group of students [10]. The results of this investigation highlight the personalization of the teaching proposal as a key to successful teaching-learning processes in on-line teaching environments [11]. This fact implies that the teacher has to use various learning objects within the LMS in order to provide a response to the learning needs of each student.…”

“…These studies are oriented from the use of EDM (Bogarín et al, 2018 ). In short, the frequency and systematicity of interaction on the platform by the learner together with the completion of self-assessment activities and average queries per day are aspects directly related to the achievement of effective learning (Sáiz-Manzanares et al, 2019b ; Yücel & Usluel, 2016 ). The analysis of logs through EDM techniques will allow teachers to analyse the behaviour patterns of their students and predict the student at risk (Sáiz-Manzanares et al, 2019b ).…”
