“…Figure 3 and Table 4 report the phenolic content of the ethyl acetate extract which turned out to be the most complex one. A total of 20 compounds were detected and tentatively identified based on their retention times, MS data and comparison together with the information previously reported in the literature [ 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 ]. Three different phenolic compounds classes were present in the ethyl acetate extract namely phenolic acids (quinic acid, gallic acid, and gallic acid ethyl ether), flavonoids (derivatives of quercetin and kaempferol) and several iridoids.…”

“…These results are consistent with those of other studies carried out on the same species [ 20 , 35 ]. The difference in compounds detection can be due to their solubility in the extraction solvent, the degree of polymerization of the phenols, and the interaction of the phenols with other constituents of the plant [ 51 , 69 ].…”

“…Anthocyanins have not only shown beneficial effects as antioxidants [ 11 ] but also, they have the ability to regulate the gene expression of adipocytokines [ 12 ]. Hence, there is little to no data in literature on the antioxidants present in the fruit of A. unedo L., especially those of spontaneous Italian flora, although its antioxidant content is very high compared to other fruits [ 13 ]. The formulation of phytoextracts rich in bioactive compounds is of fundamental importance to promote the use of these underutilized fruits in various industrial sectors, being a precious resource for the food ingredient market and for nutraceutical and cosmetic sectors.…”
